“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.” (2 Corinthians 8:9)
Before the crucifixion, the Roman soldiers flogged Jesus all over His body with a whip with sharp lead pieces attached to it. Every time it flogged His body, His flesh was torn apart, blood came out, and bones were exposed. However, Jesus did not try to avoid as prophesied in Isaiah 50:6, “I gave My back to those who strike Me.” Then why did Jesus, the Son of God, receive such harsh whippings and bleed? Why did God allow it? Jesus was pierced through and crushed for our transgressions and sins. He was scourged and shed His blood so that we could have peace and be free from all kinds of diseases (Isaiah 53:5). Matthew 9 shows that when Jesus healed a paralytic lying on a bed, He first resolved the problem of the man’s sin, saying, “Your sins are forgiven.” Afterwards, He said, “Get up, pick up your bed and go home.” And John 5 tells that after Jesus healed a man who had been sick for 38 years, He said, “Behold, you have become well; do not sin anymore, so that nothing worse happens to you.” So, the problem of sin must be solved to be released from diseases, and there must be the shedding of blood for the forgiveness of sin (Leviticus 17:11). In Old Testament times, when anyone sinned, they should slaughter an animal and offer the sacrifice with its blood for the forgiveness of sin. But, Jesus the Son of God, who came to this earth in the flesh, offered His body as atoning sacrifice and shed His blameless and spotless blood, which has the power to forgive sins and to cleanse us from sin. No more sacrifice is needed for the forgiveness of sin because all our sins in the past, present, and in the future were forgiven through His blameless blood. Matthew 8:17 says, “This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet: He Himself took our infirmities and carried away our diseases.” Therefore, anyone who knows why Jesus was whipped and bled and believes in Him has no reason to suffer from infirmities or diseases. 1 Peter 2:24 also says, “for by His wounds you were healed.” This phrase uses the past tense “You were healed” because Jesus solved the problem of our sins. Why do some believers in Jesus suffer from diseases? It is because they don’t do what is right in the eyes of God (Exodus 15:26). Suppose your child was hit by a schoolmate and came back home with a scar on the cheek. Then, some of you may say, “Why were you always hit? If you’re hit once, you should hit back the other twice or three times.” Some others may even go to the schoolmate’s parents and fight against them, so much upset and angry. But, the Scripture says, “but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.” God tells us to love even our enemies and be at peace with everyone. What is right in God’s eyes is so much different from what is right in human eyes. If we love God, it is not difficult to practice His words. You will not be sick if you do the righteousness of God. Even if you get sick, God the Healer will heal you of your sickness when you discover what is not right in God’s eyes and sincerely repent of it. You can be completely healed of any kind of disease by the precious blood of Jesus Christ. If you confess with your lips that God is omnipotent and omniscient but depend on the worldly methods and rush to the hospital when you get sick, this tells that you do not believe God is almighty. God will not be pleased with it.
